Why stories heal
Mirror Story isn't just creative writing. Every story is built on decades of evidence-based narrative therapy techniques used by child psychologists worldwide.
The techniques we use
Each story Claude generates draws on one or more of these validated therapeutic approaches. The therapist's note in every story tells you which technique was used and why.
Narrative Therapy
Separating the child from the problem by externalising it as a character or force in the story.
How Mirror Story uses it: When a child fears something, we give that fear a name and a form in the story — like "the Worry Dragon" or "the Sad Cloud." This lets the child engage with their emotion at a safe distance, without it defining who they are.
Research: Developed by Michael White and David Epston. Shown to be effective for childhood anxiety, grief, and social difficulties.

Using stories and literature to help children understand and process their own experiences.
How Mirror Story uses it: Reading about a character who faces the same challenge helps children feel less alone. When the hero shares their name and situation, the identification is even stronger — the child sees themselves solving the problem.
Research: Used by child psychologists and school counsellors worldwide. Meta-analyses show significant reductions in anxiety and improved emotional literacy in children 4-12.
Learn more →Re-authoring
Helping children rewrite their internal story from "I am broken" to "I am capable."
How Mirror Story uses it: Every Mirror Story ends with the child character finding a meaningful — not perfect — way forward. This models problem-solving and resilience, giving the child a new narrative about what they are capable of.
Research: A core technique in narrative therapy. Research shows that children who develop "growth narratives" about difficulties show better long-term coping.
Learn more →Finding the Exception
Identifying moments when the problem did NOT have power over the child.
How Mirror Story uses it: In many stories, a trusted adult asks the child character: "Has there been a time when you faced something like this before and it was okay?" This technique helps children connect with their own existing strengths.
Research: Drawn from Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). Shown to be particularly effective for school-related anxiety and social difficulties.
